Analyse how the writer sees the personal value of taking a photograph.

“will never be seen again by any human being, ever.” – hyperbole

“But photographs, they’re permanent.” – incomplete sentence

“Sun like a halo over the hills, trees waltzing with each other to a sudden gust of wind. A few tiny pixels on my phone” – contrast

In the text “Why Not” by Catherine Norman, the author uses language features to show how the sister finds personal value of taking a photograph. The author uses hyperbole, incomplete sentence and contrast to show how people can find small things such as a photograph very influential and can effect their lives.

Catherine Norman uses hyperbole to show how the sister finds a lot of value in taking photographs. Hyperbole is used to make it seem a lot more important then it is as to her it is very important and she finds a lot of value, but to an average person taking a photograph is not to exciting and important. This is shown when she says “will never be seen again by any human being, ever.” When she says “ever” this exaggerates the fact that time is passing and we can never get it back. Although it is true most people do not stress a lot about the fact that every second that passes is a second that is lost. Her showing that she finds a lot of value in taking photographs shows how people can cling onto certain things even if they are very minimal but it gives more meaning in life and helps keep it exciting.

In the text “Why Not” by Catherine Norman, she also uses incomplete sentences to show how the sister finds value in taking photographs. When she says “But photographs, they’re permanent.” this shows that photographs have a lot of meaning to her. Photographs help remind and bring back emotions of a certain time or place and when she says “permanent” this shows how she finds the photographs also make the emotions permanent bring a lot of personal value to each one. This shows us how sentimental people find a lot of value in objects, places, smells etc. and that they bring back emotions of a previous time. This can help make the present more exciting through just small things that have a memory connected to it.

Catherine Norman also uses contrast to help show how the sister finds personal value in taking photographs. Contrast can help show how large a difference is and how what people think can actually physically be a lot less then reality. This is shown when she says “Sun like a halo over the hills, trees waltzing with each other to a sudden gust of wind. A few tiny pixels on my phone” She begins by saying that the image is majestic and grand using strong adjectives and then just says “A few tiny pixels on my phone” contrasting what she just said. This provides evidence on how what she thinks is a lot different to reality and that she finds a lot of personal value innit. This also helps to show how people can attach to objects that provide emotions and use them as ‘a drug’ to keep their lives exciting through previous experiences that where more exciting then the present.
