Challenges readers preconceptions

Markus Zusak has challenged my preconceptions about the book through the use of the genre Magical Realism. Magical Realism is a way of the reader think more about the text through lying or deceiving them. Zusak has made me re-think what I originally believed was true in his book and made me wonder how else he could be deceiving us to bring up a point. He originally deceived me as the setting Molching is not actually a place but he made it seem so realistic through surrounding it with real places and describing it well. “The buildings appear to be glued together, mostly small houses and unit blocks that look nervous. There is murky snow spread out like carpet. There is concrete, empty hatstand trees, and grey air.” I only found out after reading the book that this was a lie and this made me realise that there could be many other things in the book that are like this and has made me challenge my preconceptions about the book and taught me that I should also do this in general life as I cannot just instantly believe what everyone says, I must have multiple sides to the story or have more facts to back up the idea. This is the point that I believe Zusak was trying to make when making Molching a fictional place. Death is also another way that Zusak has made me challenge my preconceptions. This is because In an average book the narrator is reliable and only speaks truths but in this book we have death and I have found that he is not actually reliable

Markus Zusak has challenged my preconceptions about the book through the genre Magical Realism. Through lying or deceiving the reader, magical realism forces them think more about the text . Zusak has made me re-think what I originally believed was true in his book and made me wonder how else he could be deceiving us to bring up a point. He originally deceived me through the setting Molching as it is not actually a place but, he made it seem so realistic through surrounding it with real places. “Quite a way beyond the outskirts of Munich was a town called Molching” I only found out after reading the book that this was a blatant lie as Munich is a real place but Molching is not. This made me realise that there could be many other things in the book that are like this and has made me challenge my preconceptions about the book. Realising this taught me that I should also do this in general life as I cannot just instantly believe what everyone says. Zusak has used this to make me re-think more ideas he has explained in the book such as the Holocaust. I have always believed the holocaust was the fault of the whole of Germany but reading this book has made me notice that it is just average people like me that have been exposed to enough hate and horror to normalise it.
