Paragraph – For Mr Waugh

“Oh, how the clouds stumbled in assembled stupidly in the sky.
great obese clouds.
Dark and plump
Bumping into each other. Apologizing.”

liesel has just beaten up a boy because he and many other students had been teasing her because she cannot read. Markus Zusak has used symbolism to give us detail of how the students are reacting after seeing one of the larger boys at school being beat up by a girl. The symbol is the clouds which represents the students as more literary, but it also represents her feelings which is supported as over the page when she is walking home from school she sits on the side walk and cries just as it begins to rain. this shows us that when she is being teased all her feelings are being stored inside her when the clouds come in and when she finally lets the emotions out it begins to rain. Markus would have used the symbolism to help put in perspective how surprised all the students where and how not normal it is for liesel to beat the boy up, as during WW2 the male gender would have still been seen as the more dominant sex and woman just follow their rules. In our time the 2 sexes are a lot more equal so we would not be surprised if a woman beat up a man, but back in liesel’s time none of the students would have known a female could beat up a male, so by the author using the symbolism we can understand it more from our perspective.

  1. Thanks Ben,

This gives me good insight. You’ve got all the practical skills you need to achieve well in English. Where I’d like to go with you is going to be supported by the genre we’re studying. There are shades of magical realism in your quote that you’re not yet aware of, but these will elevate your answers a little.

Think about how, if the elements are reflecting Liesel’s actions and if pathetic fallacy is being employed there could plausibly be an argument so say that the core elements of life are aligning themselves with Liesel. Almost as if she is reified in some way.

    What do you think?
