1. Describe a place or time where a main character felt very comfortable or uncomfortable in the
written text.
Explain how techniques helped you to understand the character’s reaction(s).
Note: Techniques could include figures of speech, syntax, word choice, style, symbolism, structure,
or narrative point of view.

Simon going to sleep after cutting the rope that Joe was hanging on, Techniques used:

Syntax, possible quotes: ‘I Should feel guilty. I don’t. I did right. But what of Joe…’ uses minor sentences which give a feeling of confusion, urgency or tension therefore giving us a better Idea of what Simon is going through due to cutting the rope.

Word Choice, uses personal pronouns a lot as if blaming himself and putting all of the future consequences on him, possible quote: ‘I argued that I was satisfied with myself. I was actually pleased that I had been strong enough to cut the rope’ this makes the readers attention draw towards the person using the personal pronouns allowing them to understand the situation a bit better.      ↔        Emotive Language, uses many words like ‘confused, vicious, guilty and violently’ which allows us to feel some of the emotions and feelings he is going through.

Figurative language, a lot of personification to allow us to know in more depth of his thoughts and reactions, letting us know how he feels about the personified things e.g. ‘Plagued with endless thoughts which turned madly upon themselves in vicious circles, sleep was impossible.’ uses adverbs like madly and vicious which give us an idea of what he thinks of the actions the personified thing is doing in this case very much dislikes the thoughts and is finding them annoying.

Paragraph Plan:

  1. Name technique
  2. Describe what technique is
  3. State the quote
  4. What the quote shows
  5. What it shows the reader and teaches them.
